NXP and T3G Deliver Breakthrough TD-SCDMA Solution to Chinese Market

Building on their leadership in TD-SCDMA, NXP Semiconductors and T3G Technologies today announced that the next-generation 3G cellular system solution T3G7208 is now commercially available to the Chinese market. The Nexperia cellular system solution T3G7208 ' a complete solution for multimode TD-SCDMA / EDGE mobile phones ' today powers the popular Samsung SGH-L288 handset. Special edition T3G7208 TD-SCDMA phones with added push-to-talk functionality have also been provided by Samsung to the Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee.

TD-SCDMA services are now in commercial trial across eight cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. With the T3G7208-powered Samsung SGH-L288, featuring video telephony, data communication at 384 kbps downlink and 128 kbps uplink and a 2 megapixel camera, end users will be able to enjoy more multimedia and fast data transfer through the 3G networks.

China Mobile Sold 2,000 TD Handsets so Far

Since China Mobile kicked off selling of TD-SCDMA mobile phones fifteen days ago in eight cities around the country, 2,000 TD handsets have been sold, 20.8% were Samsung, 19.1%, 12.6%, 12.6%,, and 8.2% for LG, Lenovo, Hisense, and Guangzhou New Postcom Equipment, respectively.

Of the total sales, home-made TD handsets took up 60%. ZTE was the most eye-caching brand. Its ZTE U980 grabbed 26.8%, with a sale of 495 sets.

Now all TD mobile phone in the market are from six brands: Guangzhou New Postcom Equipment, Lenovo, Hisense, ZTE, Samsung, and LG.

TD-SCDMA Commercial Trials to Begin in April

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) chairman and CEO Wang Jianzhou has confirmed that trial commercial use of TD-SCDMA and large-scale issuing of numbers will take place in April. China Mobile is shortly to receive deliveries from six handset and two data card manufacturers.

Trials of TD-SCDMA's next evolution, TD-LTE have also started, primarily via cooperation with foreign operators Vodafone and Verizon. TD-LTE is currently being managed by the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR), with Datang, ZTE, Putian and Spreadtrum undertaking major R&D work.

Dopod plans to launch its first TD-SCDMA smartphone in June-July

Dopod China is likely to start volume production of its first Mobile Windows-based TD-SCDMA high-end smartphones in June-July this year, according to company sources.

Dopod's TD-SCDMA smartphones will be built using chipsets jointly developed by Taiwan-based MediaTek and China-based Datang Mobile, said the sources, noting that the device will also features GPS functionality.
