TD-SCDMA Commercial Trials to Begin in April

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) chairman and CEO Wang Jianzhou has confirmed that trial commercial use of TD-SCDMA and large-scale issuing of numbers will take place in April. China Mobile is shortly to receive deliveries from six handset and two data card manufacturers.

Trials of TD-SCDMA's next evolution, TD-LTE have also started, primarily via cooperation with foreign operators Vodafone and Verizon. TD-LTE is currently being managed by the Chinese Academy of Telecommunications Research (CATR), with Datang, ZTE, Putian and Spreadtrum undertaking major R&D work.

TD-MBMS Standard to Be Approved by Early April
The First, 3/21/08

A public consultation stage for two TD-SCDMA mobile TV standards has ended, with the documents now passed to the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) for approval, and promulgation expected in late March or early April. However, even after promulgation, there is still some way to go before TD-SCDMA mobile TV can be called a success. According to experts, standards for technical requirements for TD-MBMS core network equipment, testing of core network equipment, testing of wireless access subsystem equipment and testing of terminal devices are still required.

Newsflash

Just as CMCC’s first round TD UE bidding result came out, other 4 TD handsets vendors (Holly, Coolpad, Huawei and Panda) had gotten MII issued network accessing licenses. At the same time, it is said CMCC’s second round TD bidding will start in March. Since the first purchase is only for test use, the quantity is much less than previous expectation. But the second round will be for communication during Olympics thus quantity will be much larger than first time’s.
