Dopod plans to launch its first TD-SCDMA smartphone in June-July

Dopod China is likely to start volume production of its first Mobile Windows-based TD-SCDMA high-end smartphones in June-July this year, according to company sources.

Dopod's TD-SCDMA smartphones will be built using chipsets jointly developed by Taiwan-based MediaTek and China-based Datang Mobile, said the sources, noting that the device will also features GPS functionality.

Dopod has applied for permission to sell the smartphone in China and the company is expected to secure such a permit in about 45 days, the Chinese-language Commercial Times quoted sources at Dopod China as saying.

Both Taiwan-based BenQ and Inventec Appliances previously obtained a license to manufacture and market TD-SCDMA handsets in China, but the two companies have not yet announced their production plans for such devices.

In other news, a total of 11 companies have received permits to sell TD-SCDMA terminal-end products, and four companies have obtained permits to market TD-SCDMA/HSDPA dual-mode products, according to data released by the China-based TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance.

China-based Tatung Mobile, China Putian Information Industry, ZTE, Huawei Technologies, Lenovo, Amoi Electronics as well as Motorola, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are among the companies that have received permits, according to the data.

With more than 15,000 TD-SCDMA base stations already being installed in 10 cities in China, trial commercial operations of the network will begin this month, according to the TD-SCDMA Industry Alliance.
