Dr.Li ShiHe, Father of TD-SCDMA

 

Introduction
Li Shihe
Appraised as Father of TD in China.
Born in Chongqing, he graduated from Chengdu Institute of Telecommunication Engineering in 1963 and received his postgraduate degree at Physics Department of Nanjing University. In 1982, he received a doctor degree at Montreal University of Canada.

Doctor Li Shihe, professor level senior engineer and doctoral advisor, now acts as the senior technical consultant of Datang Mobile. He has been dealing with scientific research and management work for a long time and made great accomplishment and achievement in the fields of microwave communication and mobile telecom.

Road to TD-SCDMA

June 30, 1998,  the last day of ITU assembly to the global standards of the third generation mobile communication,  China Telecom Science and Technology Research Institute (the predecessor of Datang Telecom Group), on behalf of China  submitted TD-SCDMA standard to the ITU.

A year later, TD-SCDMA technology was approvalled as the third generation mobile communication international standards by ITU.  On March 16, 2001, in california  United States held 3 GPP TSG RAN 11th plenary meeting, the TD-SCDMA standard was formally accepted by the international standards of 3 GPP.  TD-SCDMA, since then become a true sense of the world standards, China achieve a major breakthrough in the history of telecommunications within centuries.

Just as CMCC’s first round TD UE bidding result came out, other 4 TD handsets vendors (Holly, Coolpad, Huawei and Panda) had gotten MII issued network accessing licenses. At the same time, it is said CMCC’s second round TD bidding will start in March. Since the first purchase is only for test use, the quantity is much less than previous expectation. But the second round will be for communication during Olympics thus quantity will be much larger than first time’s.
